Development of a Robust Drought Index for Agricultural Applications

Investigators: Randal Koster (NASA/GSFC)

Abstract

Seasonal forecasts generated by NASA'a Global Modeling and Assimilation Office ( GMAO ) are processed into soil moisture predictions, and these predictions are incorporated into the U.S. Drought Monitor and U.S. Drought Outlook.

By comparing our experimental Drought Monitor and Drought Outlook products with the standard (and contemporaneous) versions, we will estimate, in the first year, our contribution to the usefulness of the drought prediction products. The net result will be a greatly accelerated implementation of the NASA products into the Drought Monitor and Drought Outlook products and an initial baselining of our contribution to these products. In the first year, we will also draw upon our existing involvement with the U.S. CLIVAR drought working group and NIDIS implementation team to identify, approach, and interact with additional users for our products. The US Drought Outlook and Drought Monitor are integral components of National Integrated Drought Information System ( NIDIS ).

Decision Support Tools

Drought Monitor is a DST which provides a weekly overview of where in the United States drought is emerging, lingering, subsiding or forecast. The Monitor is produced jointly by the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
