Water Resources

Current Solicitation A.40
Earth Science for Decision making: Gulf of Mexico

Overview

Our home planet has been described by NASA as a "blue marble" , characterized by its strong cycling and replenishing of water. However, with increasing population pressure and water usage, coupled with climate variability and change, water management is one of the most critical environmental problems facing us in the 21st century.

The NASA Applied Sciences Program (ASP) has the primary responsibility to apply data from NASA satellite missions to models in order to help solve problems important to society and the economy. The NASA Water Resources theme in the ASP addresses concerns and decision processes that are related to water availability, water forecast, and water quality. The goal of the Water Resources theme is to apply NASA satellite data to improve the Decision Support Tools (DSTs) of user groups that manage water resources. The Water Resources theme partners with Federal agencies, academia, private firms, and international organizations.

The goal of this website is to provide a summary of the Water Resources activities. The program has organized its project activities into the following functional categories:

In addition, there are several projects which are organized according to their funding status:

Rapid Prototyping Capability (RPC)

RPC projects are managed under the NASA Applied Sciences Program, cross-cutting program. They are funded for one year to test the use of NASA products through the stage of "Verification & Validation". If successful, the project could then become a Benchmark or an Integrated Systems Solution project.
